Shiroyone Senmaida

Shiroyone Senmaida is a scenic area located in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. It consists of over a thousand small rice paddies, each spanning just a few square meters, arranged in a steep slope facing the Sea of Japan. The unique and picturesque landscape has been designated as one of Japan's Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems.

The history of Shiroyone Senmaida dates back to over 400 years ago when the locals started building these small rice paddies to cultivate rice on the sloping terrain. The area is named Shiroyone, meaning "white rice", due to the high-quality rice that is grown there.

The rice paddies are still maintained and harvested today by the local community using traditional methods, such as hand planting and hand harvesting. The scenery is particularly stunning during the planting season in May, when the rice paddies are filled with water and the reflection of the sunset creates a beautiful glow.

Shiroyone Senmaida is not only a scenic attraction but also a cultural one. The local community has created a unique agricultural culture that has been passed down for generations, and visitors can participate in various activities such as rice planting and harvesting, and traditional rice cake making.

Shiroyone Senmaida is an important symbol of the sustainable and traditional agricultural practices of Japan. It is also a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and experience the local culture.
